Website planning guide

What to prepare before building your business website.

A useful website starts with accurate business information and a clear customer action. This checklist helps you gather both before design begins.

1. Choose the main customer action

Write down the most useful next step for a visitor: call, request an estimate, review a menu, or visit your business. Pick a primary action, then note any secondary actions that different customers need.

2. Gather the facts customers look for

  • Business identity

Use the public business name consistently. Confirm the contact email, phone number, and any public address before putting them on a page.

  • Services & service area

Describe what you actually offer and where you can provide it. Note any meaningful limits, requirements, or differences between services.

  • Hours & practical details

For a business customers visit, confirm hours and useful arrival information. For a service business, explain the normal way to begin an inquiry.

3. Select useful, permitted images

Choose photos that help someone understand your business or work. Keep the original files when possible and confirm you have permission to publish them. Avoid including customers or private information without the appropriate permission.

If you have a logo, supply the best original version available. Tell your designer if there are required colors or existing brand guidelines.

4. Review what already exists

List your existing website, domain provider, and pages that customers use. Identify content to keep, information to update, and features that may need a specific migration plan.

Keep access details secure. Start by naming the services involved rather than sending passwords in a general inquiry.

5. Plan how updates will happen

Decide who will supply new information and how changes should be requested. Discuss hosting, domain responsibilities, support scope, and the review process before launch.

After launch, review contact details and service information when your business changes. A website remains useful when the facts stay current.
